Automotive and Mobility Studies - M.Sc. Automotive Engineering

Subjects of the Master Program

This programme focuses on all disciplines within Automotive Systems Engineering, including concept, development, design and construction, as well as the manufacturing process of vehicles. The knowledge obtained from ongoing research at RWTH flows directly into lectures, seminars and workshops, thus ensuring an up-to-date and innovative curriculum.

The programme provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of Automotive Engineering. Its particular focus is on industrial R & D practices and modern manufacturing processes of vehicles and their subsystems. The program is also meant to enhance the students’ ability to lead and coordinate project teams and to strengthen their skills of scientific documentation and communication.

Course Structure

The course work is divided into two sections (Compulsory and Elective Courses). All subjects within the “Compulsory Courses” section must be covered. A total amount of 18 hours per week (during lecture period) must be covered from subjects in the ”Elective Courses” section. This total amount includes lectures and exercises. Depending on the volume of the selected subjects in the “Elective Course” section, five subjects must be chosen. The selection of these subjects may be discussed with the program coordinator at the ika (Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge).

The core compulsory courses cover the fundamentals of Automotive Engineering and include lectures such as Systematic Engineering Design I, Automotive Engineering I / II, Internal Combustion Engines Fundamentals, Production Management I, and others.
Special courses are chosen from a catalogue of subjects, including Mechatronic Systems in Automotive Engineering, Fundamentals of Lightweight Design, Manufacturing Technology I/II, Vehicle Acoustics and Welding Technology I.
An integral part of the programme is the exposure that student receives to industry-related activities. This includes a mandatory nine-week industrial internship and the opportunity to take part in applied research projects.
In addition to course work, each student will complete both a mini-thesis and a master thesis on a subject related to automotive engineering. The mini-thesis can be completed parallel to course work, while the master thesis has a total duration of four months. Either the mini-thesis or the master thesis can be completed in industry.

Moreover, a German language course is a significant part of the programme.
