Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger as the director of the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines (VKA) of the RWTH Aachen supervises the Master of Science Program in Energy Engineering. VKA together with the Institute for Technical Thermodynamics (LTT) and the Institute for Laser Measurements in Thermo Fluid Dynamics (LTFD) has been established as the Institute for Thermodynamics within the Aachen University of Technology (RWTH Aachen), in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

The VKA works on basic research projects as well as applied R&D projects related to all aspects of the internal combustion engine. Areas of focus include:

• Flow analysis and mixture preparation
• Combustion and process optimization
• Exhaust gas after treatment
• Alternative fuels
• Design and acoustics
• Fuel cells
• Hybrid vehicle technology
• Development of measuring techniques/test methods
• Control systems for drive trains

VKA serves the following clients, such as the European Union, the Federal Ministry for education and research, the Combustion Engine Research Association (FVV) as well as the Automobile and Engine Industry. In the context of international cooperation, the VKA has taken part in Community projects sponsored by the European Union and automobile manufacturers. Within this framework, many universities and research institutions from all over Europe are working closely together in interdisciplinary projects as well as with industrial partners.

Apart from offering a wide variety of lectures, training programs, seminars and laboratory research, the department gives students the possibility to write their thesis as well as being employed as student workers with strong relation to all aspects of internal combustion engine technology.

General Program Management

RWTH International Academy Ltd. (formerly: Aachen Global Academy) was founded in 2000 as a subsidiary, non-profit company of RWTH Aachen University in order to offer further education under private law. The faculties and scientific institutes of RWTH Aachen University account for the imparted contents whereas RWTH International Academy concentrates on the provision of services that will allow for a beneficial learning environment for the students as well as effective teaching. The role of RWTH International Academy is to co-ordinate scientific and educational input from the chairs and institutes of RWTH Aachen University. Participants will achieve an official academic Degree (Master of Science) of RWTH Aachen University.
